Travel Essentials: Long Weekend Drive

A long drive is always good for the soul. However, it may not be as fun if you are unprepared for the road bumps that you may encounter along the way. If you are planning to go on a long weekend drive, make sure to go over our suggested travel essentials. Whether it is a solo or a family trip, planning and advanced organization are the keys to a successful and fun road trip!

Let us start with the most important items that should be on your list.

Documents – Before hitting the road, make sure that you have your driver’s license, car registration, and proof of insurance. It is also vital that you have a list of roadside assistance contact numbers or AAA contact information.

You may need to check international travel documents should you decide to cross borders.

Roadside Emergency Kit – You never know when you will need it, but it is better to be ready! Your emergency kit should contain the following:

  • Bungee Cords
  • Cable Ties
  • Electric PVC Tape
  • Blanket
  • Hammer
  • Poncho
  • Gauge 300AMp Jumper Cable
  • Hand Crank Flashlight
  • Portable Air Compressor
  • Reflective Warning Triangle
  • Safety Gloves
  • Tow Rope

If traveling during winter, add tire chains, a scraper, and a handy shovel to your list.

First Aid Kit – This is a must-have whether you are traveling alone or with family. The kit should include allergy medicines and pain relievers.

Spare Tire– This is a no-brainer. You should be ready for anything, even a flat tire. Having a spare will help you get back on your way again in no time.

Travel Itinerary – Make an itinerary if you want to maximize your trip. This is important if your journey includes several destinations. Make advance preparations if you plan to ship your car to another state if you have train rides and boat trips involved.

Now that we have the necessities sorted out, let us look at some travel essentials that will help your long weekend drive be comfortable and fun!

Map or navigation apps– Whether it is your first time driving to a certain destination or not, it is better to have a map or a navigation app installed on your phone. This will make your drive less worrisome; moreover, you can plan stops and recreational detours ahead of time.

Snacks and Drinks – Depending on the number of people going, you should pack snacks and drinks to help curb hunger while driving to the next stop.

Neck Pillows – Sitting upright for a long time can be a pain in the neck, literally. Neck pillows should help everyone stay comfortable during the entire trip.

Chargers and Power Banks for Devices – You do not want to be without power on your cellphones and gadgets while on the road. Make sure that the mAh capacity of your power bank is enough until the next time you can find a power outlet.

Extra Clothes/ Jackets – Depending on the weather and your destination, bring extra clothing to keep you warm or for a change of fresh clothes. You want to stay fresh and dry if you plan on enjoying your trip.

Thermos – Need to stay awake for a night drive? Bring a thermos filled with coffee with you. You can easily have them refilled at convenience stores and gas stations along the way.

Last item on the list? Have fun!
