It’s a good time to be a Jeep fan. Seriously, there isn’t a stinker in the bunch. There’s the reimagined Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, plus the unveiling of the all-new Grand Cherokee, which comes on the heels of the Grand Cherokee L premiere. In addition, the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler can be fitted with the 4xe plug-in hybrid option. Lineup-wide, there are more bells and whistles including Uconnect 5 telematics and bigger display screens. If you’re planning to buy or lease, here’s an overview of the Jeep lineup for 2022, and what changes you can expect when you shop.
For this model year, the crossover SUV introduces a new X trim, and all-wheel drive is now standard on the Limited Jeep Cherokee trim. Overall, the Jeep Cherokee offers exquisite off-road prowess, formidable available turbo and V6 powerplants, a bunch of standard safety tech features, and, of course, Jeep character galore.
This Jeep sport-ute was redesigned in 2017 and spiffed up in 2022, and for this model year gets a bunch of updates, including a new trim level, according to J.D. Power.
For example, both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive iterations get a modified front fascia and restyled taillights and headlights. Inside, Compass sheds more hard surfaces and, at the same time, gains more fabric. The interior also levels up with a newly available 10.1-inch Uconnect 5 infotainment display and 10.25-inch digital display.
In addition, there’s a recalibrated suspension and newly standard safety features including active lane management, full-speed collision warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and a blind-spot warning system with rear cross traffic alert. A Highway Assist semi-autonomous driving system is new for the model year.
For this model year, the Gladiator gets bigger infotainment screens, new Silver Zynith exterior paint, and a standard cabin infiltration system. If you’re eyeing the Gladiator Sport – and why wouldn’t you? — you can now look for a 7-inch Uconnect 4 system. What’s more, the Mojave, Rubicon, and Overland trims get an 8.4-inch infotainment screen with Uconnect 4C, keyless entry, navigation, and a nice Alpine sounds system.
All new for this model year, the Grand Cherokee gets the new PHEV variant, which can be had on any standard 4×4 trim models. What’s more, the Grand Cherokee now has even better off-road ability, if that’s at all possible. A sway-bar disconnect is now available, and its Quadra-Lift air suspension gives you 11.3 inches of ground clearance, owing to new electronic semi-active damping on this Jeep SUV.
Inside, if you opt for the 10.1-inch infotainment screen, you’ll get Uconnect 5. Also available is a class-first 10.25-inch interactive display for front passengers. Rear passengers, meanwhile, get a 10.1-inch high-def display. Oh, and all screens have FireTV capability.
Reborn in, ah, “grand” style for this model year, the Grand Wagoneer comes in four trims, including Series I, Series II, Obsidian, and Series III. All these rides are four-wheel drive only and are outfitted with a 6.4-liter V8 and eight-speed auto tranny. In terms of power, we’re talking 471 powerful horses and 455 pound-feet of torque for a class-leading tow rating of up to 10,000 pounds.
On the road, an adaptive air suspension smooths out the driving experience. That’s only fitting, since the upscale interior provides best-in-class volume, in terms of spaciousness; creature comforts such as four-zone climate control; and entertainment such as the 1,750-watt, 23-speaker McIntosh sounds system. Yowzers. This is some ride, indeed.
There are four trims for this small crossover that is mostly unchanged for the model year: Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trail hawk. All trim models are four-wheel drive only, save for the Sport model.
Standard on Sport and Latitude trims are an 8.4-inch Uconnect 5 nav system. Meanwhile, Limited trims get a reworked rear valance and front fascia, plus 18-inch wheels. There’s also a new Altitude package that provides gloss-black touches inside and out.
Renegade buyers, however, will have one less powerplant to choose from, as Jeep sheds the old standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder. In its place, Renegade gets the 1.3-liter turbo-4. While the engines deliver comparable horsepower – 180 hp vs. 177 hp, respectively – the turbo does offer more torque: 210 pound-feet.
All new for this model year, the Wagoneer features an eight-speed automatic as well as a 5.7-liter V8 and hybrid eTorque powertrain that makes 392 horses and 404 pound-feet of torque.
You get to choose between two trims – the Series I and Series II – and two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Standard three rows can handle eight peeps, with optional second-row captain’s chairs.
Standard for the Wagoneer are Uconnect 5 with navigation, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, wi-fi hotspot capability, a 9-speaker Alpine audio system, and Android Auto and Apple Carplay integration. Driving assistance features include an active lane-management system, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind-spot warning.
The Wrangler carries over from the previous model year but there are some equipment changes, depending on the trim level. For instance, Sport and Sport S trims now get as standard a Uconnect 4.7-inch touchscreen. Meanwhile, the Rubicon and Sahara get an 8.4-inch Uconnect 4C display plus keyless entry. If you’re interested in the Rubicon, that gets a 4.88 axle ratio, at least those that are equipped with a 3.6-liter V6. Further, the High Altitude 4xe gets a new wheel design for the model year plus exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals. Lastly, the Billet Silver exterior paint color is supplanted with Silver Zenith.
Now that you have a handy overview of the 2022 Jeep lineup, you have the knowledge you need to get your hands on whichever Jeep you need, want, or strikes your fancy. Chrysler isn’t standing pat here, that’s for sure. In many ways, this is the year of the Jeep, and you would do well to take advantage.
